Can a Chiropractor Help With Shoulder Pain?

Often, yes. The shoulder works together with the neck, upper back and shoulder blade. Stiffness in the upper back, poor posture, weak shoulder-blade muscles or an irritated nerve in the neck can all add to shoulder pain. Chiropractic care looks at the whole area, not only the spot that hurts, with the goal of improving motion, reducing strain and helping you get back to normal activity.

Chiropractic care is not right for every shoulder problem. If your exam shows signs of a fracture, dislocation, a large rotator cuff tear or another condition that needs a medical doctor or imaging, we will tell you and refer you.

Common Causes of Shoulder Pain We See

  • Car accident injuries: the seatbelt, the steering wheel or bracing for impact can strain the shoulder. Pain sometimes shows up a day or more after the crash.
  • Sports and activity injuries: strains from golf, pickleball, tennis, swimming, weightlifting and throwing sports. See our sports injury care.
  • Overuse and work strain: repeated reaching, lifting or long hours at a desk.
  • Tendon and bursa irritation: such as rotator cuff tendonitis and shoulder bursitis. Learn more about tendonitis and bursitis.
  • Neck problems: an irritated nerve in the neck can cause pain that is felt in the shoulder. See neck pain and pinched nerves.
  • Arthritis and stiffness: aching and loss of motion that build up over time. See arthritis care.

Symptoms That Bring Patients In

  • Pain when reaching overhead or behind your back
  • Pain lying on the shoulder at night
  • Stiffness or a shoulder that won’t move as far as it used to
  • Pain that spreads from the neck into the shoulder or arm
  • Weakness when lifting
  • Shoulder pain that started after a car accident or a fall

Call 911 if shoulder or arm pain comes with chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating or nausea, because these can be signs of a heart problem. Get medical care right away if the shoulder looks deformed, you can’t move your arm at all after an injury, or the shoulder is hot, red and swollen with a fever.

What to Expect at Your Visit

Your first visit starts with a history and exam. Dr. Silvera checks how your shoulder, shoulder blade, upper back and neck move, tests strength, and checks nerve function in the arm. If X-rays or other imaging are needed, we will explain why.

Based on the exam, your treatment plan may include:

  • Chiropractic adjustments for the shoulder, upper back and neck when appropriate
  • Physiotherapy and therapeutic exercise to restore motion and build strength
  • Home exercises and advice for sleep, work and sports

We will tell you what to expect, how many visits are typical for your condition, and when to come back for a re-check.

Shoulder Pain After a Car Accident

Seatbelt and bracing injuries are common after a crash, and shoulder pain often comes with neck pain or whiplash. Get checked even if the pain seems minor. Florida law requires you to get medical care within 14 days of a car accident to use your PIP benefits. We offer same-day exams, bill your PIP insurance directly, work with your attorney and accept Letters of Protection (LOPs). Learn more about our car accident chiropractic care in Clermont.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor for shoulder pain?
No. You can book directly. If your insurance plan requires a referral, we will let you know.

Can chiropractic care fix a torn rotator cuff?
Chiropractic care does not repair a torn tendon. If your exam suggests a significant tear, we will refer you for imaging or to an orthopedic doctor. Conservative care may still help with motion and strength before or after that care.

Why does my shoulder hurt when the problem is in my neck?
Nerves from the neck travel to the shoulder and arm, so an irritated nerve in the neck can be felt as shoulder pain. That is why the exam checks both.

Do you take insurance?
We bill PIP insurance directly for car accident injuries and accept Letters of Protection. For health insurance and cash rates, call (352) 989-5555 and we will explain your options before your care starts.
