What Is Shockwave Therapy?
A handheld device sends pulses of acoustic (sound) energy through the skin into the painful area. The goal is to calm pain and encourage the body’s own healing response in tissue that has been slow to recover. There are no needles, no incisions and no medication.
Conditions Shockwave Therapy May Help
- Plantar fasciitis (heel pain); see MedlinePlus: Plantar fasciitis
- Achilles and patellar (knee) tendon pain; see our tendonitis treatment page
- Calcific tendinitis of the shoulder and rotator cuff tendon pain; see shoulder pain treatment
- Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
- Trigger points and long-lasting muscle knots
Shockwave therapy works best for pain that has lasted weeks or months. It is not a first step for a fresh injury, and it is often combined with exercise and other care. Results may vary from person to person.
What a Session Is Like
- First, an exam. Dr. Silvera checks whether shockwave therapy fits your condition and reviews your health history.
- The treatment. A gel is applied to the skin and the device is moved over the sore area. Most sessions take about 10 to 20 minutes. You may feel tapping and some discomfort; the intensity is adjusted to what you can tolerate.
- How many visits. A typical plan is one session a week for 3 to 6 weeks, depending on the condition.
- Afterward. Mild soreness or redness for a day or two is common. We usually ask you to avoid high-impact activity for 48 to 72 hours and give you simple stretches to do at home.
Who Should Not Have Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave therapy is not right for everyone. We will not use it if you:
- are pregnant
- have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners
- have cancer, an infection or acute inflammation in the area
- have a pacemaker or other implanted device near the treatment area
- are a child or teen with growth plates still open in the area
If something in your exam suggests a tear, fracture or another problem that needs imaging or a specialist, we will refer you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does shockwave therapy hurt?
Most people feel tapping and some discomfort during treatment. The intensity can be turned down, and the session is short.
How soon will I notice a difference?
Some people notice less pain after a few sessions; for others it takes several weeks after the last session. It depends on the condition and how long you have had it. Results may vary from person to person.
Can I keep taking anti-inflammatory medicine?
Anti-inflammatory medicines may work against the healing response, so ask Dr. Silvera before your first session. Do not stop any medicine your doctor prescribed without talking to them.
